Community Development
International Health Alliance recognizes the important role of infrastructure in creating and maintaining a healthy environment. For this reason in addition to our role in medicine we have begun community development projects in the areas of construction, education and sanitation. We look forward to your professional expertise as a volunteer as we embark upon the following new projects.
Business Service
We are always in need of those who bring their excellent organizational skills to our projects.
Those with skills in writing texts for treatment manuals, those with skills in designing spreadsheets for inventory control, and those with investigative and writing skills to help create a text for our pharmaceutical supplies are needed and play an integral role in helping our team. Many of these skills can be performed while in the U.S. and then as the project nears completion they are tested and revised in the field.
We look forward to your help – either at home or in the field as a U.S.IHA volunteer. Please contact us if you are interested in joining our team!
Agricultural Development
Under the direction of a soil and sanitation specialist we are beginning a clean water project for 1 village. This will involve the construction of home water filtration kits for each family.
The local health promoter will be trained to inspect the home water sources and instruct the family in the use of the water filtration system at their home. A water kit will be made available for the health promoter to perform the testing.
Cost for water filtration system per family x 50 families $2,500
Cost for water testing kit to be used for 50 families 1x/month $600
Cost to train a health promoter $50
TOTAL COST OF PROJECT FOR VILLAGE OF 50 FAMILIES $3150
Please contact us if you are interested in funding this program.
Educational Services
We are continuing our education of health promoters and expanding our services to have our current 2 health promoters – one of whom now is a Licensed Practical Nurse – to begin health promoter education to 10 small villages. There will be monthly meetings which will occur over the next year to the health promoters in the 10 villages.
Transportation cost for each meeting $40
Educational material cost for each meeting $10
TOTAL COST OF PROGRAM $500
Please contact us if you are interested in funding this program.
We are developing a reference treatment manual for the 20 most common conditions and a differential diagnosis for other less common disorders. Algorithms will be used to assist in referencing other texts and to help organize thinking about disease groups. The manual will include names of drugs for treatments and will refer to a separate drug handbook that already exists.
The pharmacy text will be supplemented with additional names for already existing medications and include the risks and rational for choosing various medications as well as a cost reference. It will include names of common natural medicines.
TOTAL COST TO DEVELOP MANUAL $200
TOTAL COST TO COPY EACH MANUAL $25
Please contact us if you are interested in funding this program.
Community Development
We are beginning construction of a pharmacy in each of two small villages. This will require a local manager who lives in the village and be responsible for the budget, ordering and maintaining an appropriate supply of the most commonly needed over the counter medications.
A laptop computer will be needed to track inventory and assist with accounting.
Budgeted construction costs will be $250 per pharmacy.
Budgeted cost of medication will be $500 per initial investment for each pharmacy.
Construction and medication cost for 2 pharmacies: $1,500
Cost for Laptop computer and printer $1,000
TOTAL COST FOR PROJECT $2,500
